Ashtray with Eros and Psyche
Benaki Museum ShopDescription
The central motif of the tray is a Roman haematite amulet. The winged figures locked in an embrace are identified as Eros and Psyche, the heroes of the symbolic short story of that name, by Apulius (2nd-1st century BC). Very popular in Antiquity, this work narrates the checkered love of the god Eros for the mortal Psyche, that finally triumphs after many trials and tribulations. 2nd-3rd century AD.
